Why did God destroy Sodom and Gomorrah?

Sodom and Gomorrah

There is one story in the bible that Christians use against gays and that is the story or Sodom and Gomorrah. I’ll inform those of you who are not aware of the common interpretation.

The story of Sodom and Gomorrah condemn homosexuality because of the word sodomite, which refers to someone who engages in anal sex, so the sin of Sodom has to do with homogenital acts. Supposedly God punished the citizens of Sodom, the sodomites, for homogenital activity, so because of this activity God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

The bible is always up for interpretation, so if God didn’t destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because of homosexual acts, then why did God destroy Sodom and Gomorrah? The other interpretation I’ve read is that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of inhospitality.

You can find the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in the book of Genesis, chapter 19, versus 1-11. Lot invited two angels in his house to eat, wash their feet and stay the night. The men of the city came to Lots house and demanded “to know “the two strange men (angels). The word “to know” occurs in the bible 943 times and; it has a sexual meaning only ten of the 943 times.

Lot was not a native to the town of Sodom and it could be that the men of the town just simply wanted to know who the two strange men were in Lot’s house. In the story Lot offered his daughters up to the townsmen, but they didn’t want Lot’s daughters. The townsmen wanted the strange men Lot had in his house. Lot is considered to be a very righteous man; so to say that Lot would offer up his daughters to be raped by the townsmen is ludicrous.

The book of Ezekiel supports the theory that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed due to inhospitality and you can find this in Ezekiel (16:48-49) “this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, surfeit food and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.” The sin of the Sodomites was that they refused to take in the needy travelers, so there is confirmation that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed due to inhospitality.

You may be wondering what happened to Lot or if you know the story already then you know. Lot was warned by the Angels that the town was going to be destroyed and to flee, so Lot took his family and left, but his wife looked back and because of that; she turned to a pillar of salt.

You can read further into this story on your own by reading the book “What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality” written by Daniel A Helminiak, Ph.D.

Just a little bit more info to help you out.

What was Sodom’s sin?
Seeking sex with angels, fornication, and going after “strange flesh”

Genesis 19:4-5
The men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

Jude 7
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Pride, wealth, lazyness, and ignoring the needs of the poor

Ezekiel 16:49
This was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness … neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

Adultery, lies, and general immorality

Jeremiah 23:14
I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.

I can truly say that no book written by any author can tell you the truth about homosexuality like the written bible can. God gave us all the ability to choose. He says in Deuteronomy 30:19-20:

19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
20 That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

If I could ask a question: “Who warns his enemy of impending danger?” God would not warn us, who he calls friend, if he didn’t love us. Repent and turn to God. He can love you with a love you have never felt. I love you my sister, and when you hear his voice, harden not your heart. Choose life.

For the life of me I can not in any way see your reasoning that GOD would make man to have SEX with another Man. Using the foulest orifice of the human body to excrete wast for sexual pleasure.

It is as he said …he would

“For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper.”
